We are a small, locally rooted Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation working in Hamilton and South Lanarkshire to make sure no household is left without the support it is entitled to.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Vega is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. We exist because the gap between what low-income households are entitled to and what they actually receive remains stubbornly, damagingly wide. Our work is to close that gap — one household at a time — by bringing benefits advice, energy support, and health information together under one roof and delivering it in the community where people actually live.
Hamilton sits at the heart of Lanarkshire, a post-industrial town where generations of working families built something lasting, and where today a significant proportion of residents live on low or fixed incomes. The challenges here are real and well-documented: higher-than-average rates of fuel poverty, long-term health conditions linked to cold and damp housing, and a welfare system that is genuinely difficult to navigate without help.
We know this community because we are part of it. Our staff and volunteers come from Hamilton and the surrounding towns. We know which estates have the oldest boiler stock, which GP surgeries have the busiest waiting rooms, and which families have been waiting months for a response from the council.
Our approach has always been whole-household and unhurried. We do not offer a one-size-fits-all information sheet and a signpost to a website. We sit with people, we listen, we do the paperwork alongside them, and we follow up until the support has actually arrived.
Over the years that approach has earned us the trust of households who would not otherwise engage with any statutory or third-sector service — and it has delivered results that a call-centre model simply cannot match.
All of our services are free of charge and open to any household in Hamilton and the surrounding South Lanarkshire area that is on a low income or facing financial hardship.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Vega grew out of a recognition — shared by a group of Hamilton residents, a retired GP, and a former housing officer — that the town's most vulnerable households were being failed not by a lack of available support, but by a lack of anyone to join it up. Families were missing out on thousands of pounds in benefits, living in homes that a relatively modest grant could have made habitable, and attending A&E with conditions that proper heating and a stable income would have prevented.
The founding trustees formalised the organisation as a SCIO to give it the governance and accountability that sustained community work demands, and began operating from a community hall in the centre of Hamilton with a handful of trained volunteers and a borrowed laptop.
In the years since, Vega has grown steadily — not by chasing scale for its own sake, but because word travels fast when people see their neighbours' lives genuinely improve. Families referred us to their relatives. A local housing association started asking us to work alongside their tenants. NHS Lanarkshire social prescribers began sending referrals. We have never lost the founding instinct that this work is best done face-to-face, in people's homes, in the community centres and faith halls they already trust. That instinct is still the thing that distinguishes us.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Vega is governed by a board of trustees who bring together expertise in health, social welfare, housing, and community development. Each trustee gives their time voluntarily and is motivated by the same conviction that drives everyone who works with us: that a family in Hamilton should not have to choose between heating and eating, and that the right information, delivered by the right person at the right time, can change that.
Day-to-day delivery is carried out by a small team of paid staff and a dedicated group of trained volunteers, all of whom are embedded in the community they serve.
